Interviewed Ms. Karissa. ^^
1) What did inspire you to do the creative project by demon stories?
K: UHm..Marshall showed us one of the demon stories on Youtube by his previous student. She talked about her discomfort here in America. She was discriminated and Uhm..Yeah..On the other hand, I felt the opposite, I saw many Chinese people like me, I could enjoyed food in America that are the same in my hometown like “BUBBLE TEA”..I LOVE IT..So I want to a demon story like her but to show my appreciation to America.
2) Could you explain more about the stoires behind the drawing?
K: So…..my story is based on my daily life in America, mostly the first 2 weeks in US. It’s very different from what i thought. ok..SO…the experience begins at the airport. When I first landed, I saw fields of green. I got excited because I never see grass before..[I’m laughing]..The second thing I realized was the lovely weather over here. It’s almost always sunny. And then as I went through the tunnel to get out of the airport, I saw big poster that said :”welcome to San Franciso.” And I wondered if I really are welcomed to this country.OK..As I arrived at the immigration place, I looked around but there wasn’t any Caucasians, only chinese, indians. The guy was helping me out was a Chinese guy, because his last name is Chan, he spoke Cantonese to me. Then my brother at the airport, he said he was gonna take me to food. I saw pictures of real AMerican food like Mcdonnal, frenchfried..[etc]. And then..we arrived at the plaza where there were many restaurants with Chinese characters. We came to this place with the word “somethign Pho”, with fake coconut. I told my brother it’s not the white restaurant. He said : It’s Vietnamese,Dumb”. But I missed the Pho that I ate in Macau. IT’s different than this. I never taste Pho again, so I’m glad that I did. ^^
3) If you have more time like you wish you could have it, would you want to make you drawing diffferently and better??
K: I will use water color instead of wood color pencils, uhmm…because I bought paper for color color, so it doesn’t go well with wood color. It didn’t cover all the part on the paper, so I had to recolor those spaces several times..=.=”and uhm I’d start earlier instead 6 hrs before it was dued.
4) What are the difficulties?
K: let’s me see. it’s hard to draw from my imaginations and my memories. For ex, in your mind, you know how the foreigner looks like, but when you draw, it’s hard to describe which ethnicity the character is. so i used colors to help with this problem. For ex: a foreigner, i colored yellow for hair. That can be different from my experiment. In oder to show different color, i just picked the stereotypes colors for each character. another one is the materials and tools that i used are not appropriate. At first i wanted to buy the hard paper, that’s y i bought watering paper. but for my project i used wood color pencil, because the time was limited. So that way I didn’t have to mix the color then create another problem.plus i didn’t a lot of variety of wood colors, and then so..for some color, it appeared into wierd color, such as Barney’s color. I ddnt’ have purple, so i had to mix blue and red together. So it turned out into a wierd purple-ish color.
5) If you have another chance, would you like to do other pieces rather than demon stories?
K: Yes, I would. I wanna do smth like Ann leslie, like write a song with a lyrics that can related to the project then make into a song, and perform with a guitar. But there is problem, I’m not good with writing lyrics so I need a spoke word partner so I play his/her piece instead.
