M. Butterfly [ flash back 1]

“We, who are not handsome, nor brace, nor powerful, yet someone believe, like Pinkerton, that we deserve a Butterfly.” (13) [Q]

I think Gallimard has a stereotype about the Asian people, especially Asian women. Most of the time, Western men think that Asian women will make the best wife. Because these women are small, submissive and obedient. They can please their man easily. These women are quite different than the Western women. Even if the husband yells at his wife, she still has to be quite and tries to make him calm dowm. Moreover, based on Gallimard’s words, that even though a Western man is ugly and he isn’t tough nor fearless, there will still be a Butterfly [an Asian woman] who willing to be his wife or mistress. Western men often think they are the tough, dominant people, and Asian people are always weak, feminine and suborniate. So they think they can easily rule these tiny people and women. Moreover, this in once in the life time they are in these Asian countries, such as China, Vietnam, etc. So why they don’t try to get one of the beauties, one of the Butterflies.
